Starting up our Christmas Book Advent in 2011 was one of the best little holiday traditions I've started at our house. Evan LOVED opening up a book each night - calling it the "book present", even though many had been a part of our house library for quite a while.
Last week I got our collection out to prep it for the start of December next week.
Here's the way we work it at our house >>> we have collected a bunch of Christmas books over the past few years - these are the bulk of our Book Advent. Then I choose a few new books to add to it each year, and rotate out a few, too.
So I've hauled them all out, and sorted them >> And then I wrap them all up...
But before I do that, I organize them so that I can label each with the day to open - thus ensuring that our absolute FAVORITES come first for multiple readings, and that 'Twas The Night Before Christmas' comes last on the 24th. I used my Silhouette this year to make the labels quickly (rounded square + number) and attached with washi tape.
...And then starting on December 1st and up until Christmas Eve, we open the book for that night - READ IT - and also select one of the already-opened books to read, too. :)
I love that they boys get so excited about this, and it puts an emphasis on holiday reading (Bedtime Books are already a nightly mainstay in our house!), and I hope it will be something that they remember for a long time.
Here are a few more of our faves from our own Advent:
>> If you want to try this for your own family, there are tons of ways to modify the book advent to work for you - You can even start with a few books and just open one every night for a week (or 12 days, etc) before Christmas. You can also check books out from the Library to fill in the selection you already have. And if you find holiday books at a garage sale or on clearance throughout the year - grab them and put them away for December.
And just for fun, I let the boys spend a good hour looking through the books when I got them out - making it all the more fun for them to open them up in just a few weeks!
Happy almost-December! :))
